Hospital to Send Medical Teams and Supplies as Part of Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief

More than three weeks after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on September 20, food, water, medicine, and electricity remain scarce throughout the island.

Norwegian American Hospital, which serves Humboldt Park’s primarily Puerto Rican neighborhood, has been designated by community leaders to provide medical services and teams of physicians and nurses to assist with the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria. This will be a long-term recovery effort and the impact on local health will likely have far-reaching consequences.

You can help by donating to the Norwegian American Hospital Foundation Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief Fund One hundred percent of your tax-deductible gift will go to purchasing medication and medical supplies and funding the cost of sending the medical teams to Puerto Rico.

Pediatric Care-A-Van Wins National Award
  • President & CEO Mr. José R. Sánchez and Director of Mobile Services Gabrielle Sauder, MSN, BSN, PNP-BC accepting the NOVA Award in San Diego, CA.

  • In July, the Norwegian American Hospital Pediatric Care-A-Van was one of only five winners nationwide of the prestigious American Hospital Association NOVA award, which recognizes “bright stars of the health care field” that collaborate to improve community health. The Care-A-Van is a fully equipped mobile medical clinic that provides free preventive care – including physicals, immunizations and screenings for lead, hemoglobin, hearing and vision – to more than 3,000 low-income and underserved children at 80 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) sites and other locations in some of Chicago’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods.  Children served by the Care-A-Van face barriers to receiving basic care; nearly all are low-income, and 92 percent identify as African American, Hispanic/Latino, or other minority.

Locally, the Care-A-Van is visible and active in the Humboldt Park area, annually participating in more than a dozen health fairs and community events on the west side of Chicago. Our thanks to Nestle Waters North America for generously donating cases of bottled water for students, patients and staff at this summer’s events. Thank you, Nestle!

New Care-A-Van Arrives!

We are excited to announce that our new Care-A-Van arrived September 29 and is in full service! The new van, which has a restroom and additional storage and counter space, will allow for expanded services and operational improvements. We are grateful for the ongoing and generous support of the Children’s Care Foundation – our philanthropic partner in providing community-based health care and health services for medically underserved poor children living in metropolitan Chicago.
