Mobile Care-A-Van Wins Prestigious National Award

In July, 2017 the Norwegian American Hospital Pediatric Care-A-Van was one of only five winners nationwide of the prestigious American Hospital Association NOVA award, which recognizes “bright stars of the health care field” that collaborate to improve community health. The Care-A-Van is a fully equipped mobile health clinic that provides no-cost preventive health services to more than 3,000 low-income and underserved children at Chicago schools, daycares, and organizations in the community’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Children served by the Care-A-Van face barriers to receiving basic care; nearly all are low-income, and 92 percent identify as African American, Hispanic/Latino, or other minority.

“Providing no-cost health services to children and young people at schools, daycares, and organizations in the community.”

Norwegian American Hospital’s Pediatric Care-A-Van is a fully equipped Mobile Health Unit that provides no-cost preventative health care services to low-income children and young people at schools, day care centers, and community organizations in Humboldt Park, West Town, Logan Square, Austin, and the surrounding neighborhoods on the West Side of Chicago.

Since 2008, it has been expanding the range of services it offers to include school physicals, immunizations, vision and hearing screening, lead and hemoglobin testing, dental exams and fluoride application, nutrition counseling and soon, sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents.

The team is led by Dr. Gabrielle Sauder, Director of Mobile Services, with a staff of dedicated pediatric nurse practitioners, dentists, medical assistants, drivers, residents, behavioral health specialists and community volunteers. In 2017, the Care-A-Van program was one of five organizations nationwide to receive the prestigious American Hospital Association NOVA award.

The Pediatric Care-A-Van is completely funded through private foundations and generous donors who are passionate about childhood wellness and improving the health and futures of some of the most vulnerable members in our communities.
